People work hard and for a longer duration to earn more and fulfill the family desire for a better lifestyle. So if you think you are putting lots of efforts and hard work still you are not sufficiently paid then you have two alternatives. Either start searching for a new job or talk to your higher authority to increases your salary.

Though both create new tension but also create new opportunities for your hard work. If you are searching for the new job there are many websites where you can register yourself giving your job title, experience, and key skills areas which may be in demand somewhere? But if you believe your current job is good and opportunities to grow further then you can ask the employer for a raise. You will have to speak up with your current employer so comes to know that you are not satisfied with the pay that you are getting and need an increase.

When to ask for salary hike?

When asking for a salary hike choose your timing carefully. To know which is the right time here are few questions you can ask yourself.

     1. The financial health of the company – Is your company financially well off?  If yes, then the time is right. You can gather information and look for warning signs like layoffs and/or cutbacks. You can do company research through news and stories of other companies by going through financial reports.

    2. Manager’s mood – Do not talk for a raise when your manager is under a lot of stress or is focused on something important. It is better to talk when he is calm and cool and eager to listen to you.

    3. Identify the best time of the year – Most of the companies conduct a quarterly or annual performance of the employees. So if you sense one coming up talk to the employer about your salary package. At the close of present financial year employers usually, plan and budget for the next year. This is the time you should wait for throughout the year to start a conversation with your employer or manager.

    4. On completion of a significant project or task – Once you have completed a crucial or significant task. Seeing that company is doing well and employer or manager is in relax and tension free mood, you can start your conversation about the project and slowly turn the topic towards increasing cost of living. On judging the reaction you can put forth your point of raise in salary.

Regardless of in which direction your conversation goes (positive or negative) always put up a brave smile and thank your manager or employer for giving you time and patiently considering your case. After a day or two do communicate through email as to why you were asking for a raise. Remember to mention your conversations in the email.

This will serve two purposes. When the manager talks to someone in HR department about your salary rise this email will make it easier for him to kick start a conversation. And if your raise is rejected it will serve as a record of your conversation. And when on any future date the topic crops up you can use it as a reference at that point.
